Beyoncé and Kate Middleton: Still Not Fashion Icons

Last year we made the case that Beyoncé and Kate Middleton aren’t fashion icons, and it seems the rest of the world might finally be coming around. Famed Canadian author Margaret Atwood voiced the opinion that Middleton “dresses quite uneventfully” at a discussion this week. Though Atwood is no fashion plate herself, it does mark the rare occasion that someone under the rule of the British crown—let’s not forget that Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth—spoke out criticizing the monarchy and its fashion taste.
As for Bey, yesterday evening Jay Z posted a clip of the couple’s wedding to his Instagram—the first time the clip has been uploaded to the Internet, though it was shown at their On the Run concert in 2014 and recorded in countless YouTube shorts. In Jay’s Instagram video, Beyoncé is seen wearing a strapless gown with a full skirt and a slicked-back bun. She looks beautiful, but then again, when does she not? Her conventional bridal choice just proves that she’s not aiming to change the dialogue of fashion, but rather just to look like her best self. (Remember Solange’s wedding in November? Now that’s how a fashion icon gets dressed for her big day.)
Interestingly, the issue most of the couple’s fans found in the clip and took to the comments of the post to discuss was Bey’s lapis blue nail polish. If there was any question that the duo is really into the color blue—it’s their kid’s name, their company Tidal’s logo—this video probably settles it.
