This conclusion was reached following a study conducted by Dr. Sonia of Provoté and colleagues in 1683 workers who worked in a factory of brake lining in the Calvados department. In this accommodation, several cases of respiratory illnesses due to asbestos had been reported. Thus, sensors measuring the amount of asbestos fibers into the atmosphere had been installed, which was used to estimate quite accurately the concentration of the substance in different workshops. In retrospect, the career path of each employee was traced. This helped to better assess the amount of asbestos absorbed by each worker.Undertake a screening policy in exposed workers
However, the number of gastrointestinal cancers (48 cases) observed in this population between 1978 and 1992 turned out significantly higher than expected (33.9 cases based on cancer registries in the Calvados department). The likelihood of developing cancer of the colon and rectum was also higher among factory workers. Doctors were able to prove that the danger was the level of daily exposure to asbestos.
Usually, it is recommended to detect colorectal cancer from 50 years realizing immediately colonoscopy in people who are at particular risk vis-à-vis this disease. Given the fairly high risk that the former asbestos workers are subjected, the Norman doctors recommend to conduct this review in a systematic way for this particular population. This would detect any cancer of the colon or rectum beginner and therefore still curable.Soon, official recognition?
These results show how much it was necessary to ban dangerous pollutant that is asbestos. Norman's doctors hope their work study may lead to a revision of the tables used for the recognition of occupational diseases. Workers exposed to asbestos and who developed colorectal cancer could then be compensated.
